Which is best for hosting a small business/commentary website?

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

WordPress, Intuit, or some other hosting site?

The site'll be sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal fiction-oriented, with a "bookstore" where people can buy short stories and even novels written by myself and other contributors, a free newsletter section with articles and reviews of sci-fi and hard science events, and forums to discuss sci-fi television/books/movies/etc.

And by "best", I mean financially, thematically, and any other "-ally" that comes to mind.

Try Microsoft office small business hosting. It is a free hosting site for businesses. smallbusiness.officelive.com/en-u… you can add sales for a fee.

Take a look at:

threehosts.com/business

There you can reach the three reputable companies that are leaders in the E-commerce web hosting industry. They fulfill all your requirements to sell online or do/accept any online payments. by using each of them, everything you need for such a website is provided in one business Hosting Package.

Hope this helps.

Using a Blog Web Host Vs Free Blogs

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

There is a wide variety of sites and pages on the Internet that have usually have a single purpose which is to get the users attention. once the attention has been captured, the next step is for the user to act. Some sites are interactive and others are not as they simply provide information. Blogging is a fun way to provide information to internet users; it is easy to do but you’ll need a blog web host first before you can start.

Free Blog?

First let’s think if a free blog would fit the needs and demands or should a little bit of money be spent and a self web hosting would be better. Next step – which program, such as Blogger or WordPress, should be used. after that decision has been made, deciding upon where the blog should be hosted would be the next landmark in having your own blog on the Internet.

I think it’s great that there are hosts that will provide a free blog but if your intentions are to run a business then it would make more sense to pay. my reasoning is because the drawbacks to a free hosting has its limitations that will inhibit your website and therefore minimize your success. these limitations are:

Bottlenecks (your site is on a shared server so there are a LOT of other websites using the same server

Limited disk space and low bandwidth

No option for a personalized domain name

Technical support is limited

Spend the Money

If you are unsure if you really want to blog or not, a free blog is a good testing ground to find that out. Give yourself about a month or so and see how it goes and at the end if you want more then you should change to a blog web host as soon as possible although you will have a time doing so. Why did I just make this sound like a big deal? Because it is – especially if you have a lot of links and followers at this point in time.

If you don’t change, the free hosts’ server won’t be able to handle the load. what then? You’ll have to switch but then you’ve lost a ton of traffic to your blog, any and all search engine traffic that you’ve acquired will be lost, there would be tons of broken links and if anybody bookmarked your site, then those are gone as well.

So what was the alternative? buy It doesn’t cost that much and in the end you will be glad that you did. It doesn’t take long to build up the links and to begin have a lot of readers; once you have an audience then you can build on what you started and know that your money was well spent.

Arian Foster Injury: Texans Should Be Worried About Foster’s Hamstring

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

Bob Levey/Getty Images

If Houston Texans running back Arian Foster is to repeat as the NFL’s rushing champion this year, he’s going to need to get plenty of breaks.

So far, Foster is not off to a good start in that regard. a left hamstring injury kept him out of action at Texans camp for two weeks, and Foster aggravated that same injury in the first quarter of Houston’s 30-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.

The good news, according to the Houston Chronicle, is that Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said on Sunday that there’s nothing to worry about. Foster is fine.

“Everything’s positive today,” said Kubiak. “It’s the same thing we dealt with at the start of camp. until he’s there, though, there’s going to be a concern. All indications are positive.”

The rough translation: Foster is okay, but not having him is worrisome.

There’s definitely a seed of doubt there. And there should be. despite Kubiak’s insistence that Foster is fine, he has to know that hamstring injuries can be tricky.

The main reason for this, of course, is that they don’t go away very easily. this is twice in the span of a month that Foster’s hamstring has acted up on him. That could be a fluke, but the more likely reality is that it’s the start of a trend.

While not quite a season-ending injury, a recurring hamstring problem is, or at least should be, pretty high on the list of concerns for Foster. We’re talking about a guy who can burst through a hole as well as any back in the league, and a gimpy hamstring is obviously going to effect his ability to do that.

And that’s assuming that Foster is even going to be able to stay on the field. his left hamstring has already sidelined him twice, so what’s to stop it from sidelining him again during the regular season?

All things considered, there are just some bad vibes surrounding Foster right now. many already consider him a one-year wonder, and now he’s become an injury-prone one-year wonder.

That’s definitely bad news for fantasy owners, but it’s even worse news for the Texans. their offense will still be good even if it can’t rely on Foster, but it’s hard to imagine it being as prolific as it was last year.

If so, we’re going to see their revamped defense put to the test.

Seven Tricks to Help Get a Job Now

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

With nearly 14 million Americans out of work and the unemployment rate sitting at 9.1% in July, finding a job in today’s labor market is no easy feat.

Of those unemployed, the labor department reports about a million of them are not actively looking for work because they believe no jobs are available for them. but experts say the first steps to snagging a job is staying positive and be open minded to different opportunities.

“You need a job now. Don’t turn something down because it’s not perfect,” says Bruce Hurwiz, president and CEO of Hurwitz Strategic Staffing. “Full-time employment may be the goal, but the aim is to be able to pay the bills. in this market people have to be realistic.”

Describing the job market as anemic is an understatement, but there are tricks job seekers can do to increase their chances of being hired. here are seven experts tips to getting hired:

Go after temporary and freelance work in your target field. Research by The Human Capital Institute indicates that one third of the U.S. work force is now composed of contract workers as corporations cut permanent staff to reduce staff. this pool of workers is growing at more than twice the rate of the full-time work force.

Temporary, contract and freelance work can lead to a permanent gig, but at the time, it helps pays some bills and build a portfolio, Hurwiz says.

Narrow your search. Casting a wide net during your search might not bring in more fish since you won’t have the time to carefully craft customized resumes and cover letters for the positions.

Applying to job openings that truly match your skills and interests will increase your odds of getting the right job.

Become a thought leader online. Blogging and participating in LinkedIn group discussions increases your online visibility and lends credibility.

“Sharing relevant information with colleagues and potential hiring managers helps position you as someone who cares about the industry and is insightful and well-connected in that particular area,” says Dana Leavy of Aspyre Solutions, a career consulting firm. “Who wouldn’t want someone who demonstrates that level of creativity, ambition and connectivity on their team?”

Seek the help of a headhunter. “If your profession uses recruiters, such as management or IT, give a couple firms in your area a call. Organizations pay them good money to find the right person. That might be you,” says Laura Evenson at Bersin & Associates, a research and consulting firm.

Use your network tactfully and contact workers on the inside. Research employees in the company you want to work for and get to know them. And don’t be afraid to ask them if it is possible to schedule an informational interview with the person in charge.

“Many times [employees] will earn a referral bonus if they recommend you,” says bill Humbert, founder of RecruiterGuy.com and recruiter consultant.

But be sure to reach out  it in a “non-annoying sort of way,” warns David Lewis, president and CEO of Operations, Inc., a human resources consulting  firm. That means avoiding incessant contact and being tactful in your approach to get to know employees.

Get creative. With hundreds of applicants potentially vying for one job, it’s important to stand out and leave a good impression.

Take Chris Kimball, a former jobhunter who wanted a job in advertising and took the obligatory post-interview thank-you letter as a chance to display his creative prowess:

“Following the interview I purchased a dozen or so generic postcards, the messages went something like this: ‘Hey John, we’re having a great time here…P.S. I hear you are thinking about hiring that Chris Kimball guy. you should. I hear he’s great.’ I mailed the postcards to all my friends around the world and had them mail the postcards back to [the boss]. upon receiving the first postcard, [he] was a bit confused … 12 postcards later, he called me and I got the job.”

Clean up your online life. It might seem like a non-brainer to most, but be sure to take down public photos you wouldn’t want your boss to see; remember that every Tweet or status update represents your brand.

“This is the part where people figure out their message and get it out there. at minimum you need a website. Head to WordPress.com to get a free one sorted out in 15 minutes or less and consider paying for hosting so its under your control,” says Beth Campbell Duke, principal of Campbell Duke Personal Branding. “But your website is the only piece of online real estate you own and control. your web address goes on everything: business card, resume, social media accounts, etc. your w eb presence has your back when you take your networking offline.”

Building Bridges: How American Colleges Should Approach China

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

Despite a palpable anxiety in the United States over China’s looming political power, American academe is also optimistic about China. Colleges and universities are drawn toward the nation not only as a haven for international exchange, but also as a source for full-tuition-paying students.

For substantive partnerships and exchanges to take hold, American administrators need to become more aware of and sensitive to relating to their Chinese higher-education counterparts.

Though higher education is facing tough economic times in the United States, it is flourishing in China. instead of experiencing cuts in government funds, the sector has seen government research support increase 20 percent every year for the last decade, and the number of Chinese higher-education institutions has doubled over the same period, from 1,022 to 2,263. The government has poured money into its Project 985, which focuses support on the country’s top 39 universities with the aim of making them world-class institutions. As a new phase of Project 985 gets under way, the government has pledged 39 billion yuan (about $6-billion) of additio nal investment. Flush with cash, Chinese universities are looking for serious American institutional partners for collaborative programs in teaching and scholarship.

What is to be done? American universities need to get over the postcolonial moment and realize that they are now in the position of having to market to and persuade, rather than merely dictate to and absorb, potential Chinese educational partners. In the past, too many American university administrative visits have contributed to Chinese perceptions that the trips are little more than glorified junkets. Those visits accomplished very little besides signed agreements that were general statements of good intentions, not distinct frameworks for academic collaboration. Chinese univers ities have wised up to that tactic, so such trivial face-to-face excursions actually hurt credibility rather than help. And in China, “face” (mianzi), once sullied, is nearly impossible to recover. American university and college presidents and deans who don’t want to get left behind in the China rush, but also genuinely want to build something, may appreciate some advice.

Preparation. Prepare by learning in detail about potential partners. begin by looking for an English-language Web site, the state of which will indicate some degree of institutional English-language proficiency (or not). If the institutions don’t have a functional English-language Web site, find a bilingual Web-savvy assistant and offer information-technology support to your potential partner to help develop one. Such help is in the interest of both sides (few faculty and staff members have the time or patience to wade through obscure Web sites filled with “Chinglish” aphorisms and unpronounceable place names). Become a ware of academic reputations, by checking the Chinese-university rankings of the Chinese Academy of Management Science—they’re even more controversial than those of American colleges by U.S. News & World Report, but they are known and read by Chinese academic administrators. at the very least, the rankings provide a thumbnail sketch of a university’s reputation relative to others’ and may provide initial talking points.

Respect. Acquaint yourself with the people you will meet, practicing the correct pronunciation of their names and becoming well-versed in their fields, learning just enough Mandarin to greet and thank people. Bring appropriate gifts, and respect hierarchies. Don’t give everyone the same college tie made in China, and make the effort to differentiate between gift recipients. have someone familiar with the institution make discreet inquiries about expectations and past experiences so that neither side feels shortchanged.

Sincerity. Come with a clear purpose in mind, and be prepared to give a concise presentation about what makes your institution special and how that can lead to mutually beneficial programs. Be specific about your goals and vision for partnership. Remember, you are trying to develop genuine “personal relationships” (guanxi) for long-term institutional benefit, relationships that may grow beyond institutional connections and last through several generations.

Cultural sensitivity. Higher education in China is still an elitist enterprise for the best and the brightest students. Though college attendance is growing rapidly, under 9 percent of China’s population hold university degrees. Meritocracy is valued as an ideal. The educational system may still be Communist in name, but it is pervaded by Confucian ideals, which inspire tremendous respect for learning and academic achievement. Listen carefully to what Chinese academics say to you and demonstrate that you are paying attention. Don’t be an ugly American sucking up all the oxygen in the room. Be humble about America’s extraordinary accomplishments and place in the world; many Chinese feel that we have no appreciation of what China has achieved in the last 20 years, let alone over the past five millennia.

Work hard; play hard. Don’t leave your Chinese hosts with the impression that you are more interested in sightseeing and shopping (many American academics have). Though business is rarely discussed during the interminable banquets, use them to build personal bonds with your hosts that can lead to productive meetings outside the dining room. have someone in your party who is good at discovering common interests take charge of “breaking the ice.” during the meal, remember that moderation can be interpreted as disinterest and finickiness. Toast gracefully, gratefully, and often, and eat everything in fro 0;t of you with public relish. Chinese delight in and begin to trust people who show genuine knowledge, enthusiasm, and enjoyment of Chinese culture, and that often begins with Chinese cuisine.

Goodwill. When hosting Chinese delegations in the United States, make an effort to match their scholarly and individual interests with site visits and special activities. show goodwill by interacting on a personal basis outside of meetings, by sharing your own individual enthusiasms. Being a good host to Chinese delegations involves far more than picking up the bill; it is an opportunity to demonstrate thoughtfulness, Be sure to reciprocate the visitors’ gifts and hospitality in ways they appreciate (that is, no rare-steak dinners or “American” meals of hot dogs and hamburgers), or you will risk being thought of as insincere and even cheap. Open your home whenever possible.

China’s expanding educational horizon is replete with opportunities and challenges, complicated by a century of Sino-American misunderstanding that has vacillated between fear and favor, alternating between images of China as a rapacious tiger to be thwarted and a suffering panda in need of rescue. American administrators need to be aware of potential problems, like threats to academic freedom in China, but should also understand that an open and frank dialogue with their Chinese counterparts is the best way to solve such issues.

There are also concerns of a more practical nature. Would-be academic Marco Polos face a dizzying mix of the developing world and the future in many urban areas in China, where migrant-worker slums abut avant-garde skyscrapers. China enjoys great cellphone coverage (better than in most places in the United States), yet that exists in tandem with tightly controlled Internet access, unreliable information-technology assistance, and irregular postal service.

During visits to China, many outsiders become extremely frustrated with apparently disorganized and contingent scheduling that is almost always changed at the last minute, but that does not necessarily bespeak disrespectful attitudes toward a particular individual or institution. It’s simply the consequence of two millennia of “big man” decision making, in which the top person in the organization has the last word and often exercises that prerogative at the last minute, thereby creating disincentives for middle- or low-rung administrators to lock down a nything in advance. Academic leaders in search of building workable, mutually beneficial, long-term relationships with Chinese partner institutions must understand that history and find a way to not miss the boat—without going overboard.

Hao Huang is a professor of music at Scripps College and the founder of the Global Initiatives at Scripps Team. he has been the faculty director of several Chinese institutional projects. Dru C. Gladney is a professor of anthropology at Pomona College, recent president of the Pacific Basin Institute, and former dean of the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, in Honolulu. his most recent book is Dislocating China (University of Chicago Press, 2004).

Bainbridge Island’s Treehouse Cafe Lands James McMurtry, Solidifies Itself as a Much-Needed Venue in Kitsap County

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

James McMurtry plays the Tractor Tavern on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and Bainbridge Island’s Treehouse Cafe on Thursday, Sept. 22.Earlier this year we wrote about Bainbridge Island’s Treehouse Cafe when they booked the Moondoggies to play the 250-person room for $10. for Island reisidents and their neighbors in Kitsap County (Poulsbo, Kingston, Bremerton, etc.) the show–according to a review by Reverb’s Gwendolyn Elliott–was a rare chance to see a top-shelf show without hopping the ferry. and for Seattle residents, it provided a chance 16;o see the band in a venue considerably smaller than the 1,000+ Showbox that they’ve been playing in town lately.

After a year of hosting shows, Treehouse owner Arnie Sturham says the room has hit its stride. In addition to booking up-and-coming Seattle acts (Zoe Muth, Nov. 5) and local favorites (Pearl Django, Aug. 27), they’ve had success snagging headliners (Greg Brown’s Nov. 8 show sold out in short order), including Austin troubadour James McMurtry–recently profiled by SW editor Mike Seely–for a Sept. 22 set.

That the Treehouse has found a sustainable, live-music niche for itself on Bainbridge is significant in that after many fits and starts, it’s a rarity for a venue in Kitsap County to book acts normally found in Seattle clubs with any regularity. It also represents something of a compromise on the part of Seattle clubs and promoters who have been hesitant to allow acts to play a possibly competing show in such close proximity.

Sturham says the Moondoggies’ set was probably the only show in the last year that drew a larger crowd from King than Kitsap County. and he has no interest in trying to take business away from the band’s Seattle club show.

“We certainly do not want to step on anyone’s toes,” he says. “If [Seattleites] can see McMurtry at the Tractor or see them here, I don’t think they see them as stealing from their market.”

For Bainbridge Island and Kitsap County residents–badges I’ve worn at different points in my life–the reality of seeing a show at the Tractor, for example, means driving onto the ferry both ways ($30+), and getting home well after 2 a.m., which is pretty much out of the question on school nights if the artist isn’t a must-see. Sturham’s shows, on the other hand, start at 8 and are over by 11. and while they may peel off the occasional hardcore fan from a Tractor show, any sliver of revenue lost is 8;ikely more than offset by the way the room is strengthening the regional scene by creating another night for bands to play on the end of a Seattle show that doesn’t involve a long haul.

Upcoming Treehouse shows include:

– Aug. 25: Whitney Monge — Aug. 27: Pearl Django– Aug. 28: the Preservation– Sept. 16: Amy LaVere– Sept. 17: Taste of Lynnwood, Featuring LeRoy Bell, Massy Ferguson, Dysfunction Junction, Grupo Meridional, Johnny Bregar & the Country Dawgs– Sept. 22: James McMurtry– Oct. 8: Greg Brown (sold out)– Oct 22: Abby Mae & the Homeschool Boys– Nov 5: Zoe Muth

SAP Business ByDesign and BusinessOne on a collision course?

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

Bringing a new product to market is never easy for even the most seasoned of vendors. SAP’s Business ByDesign is a classic example that will go down in the text books as one where navel gazing produced the wrong result which was only righted when the company took one too many kicks to the groin. Today, ByDesign is a rapidly maturing solution that is hitting its delivery marks and racking up customers at a fair clip. the company reports some 500 customers so far with a target of 1,000 by year’s end. if they achieve that then they will have done well.

Not to be eclipsed, SAP BusinessOne is not so shabby either. with a current customer count north of 31,000, some 300 solution partners and 500 solutions plus 22,000 downloads of an app from the iTunes store it represents a relative success story for SAP. But…

Yesterday, a group of SAP Mentors were treated to a quick skim over the B1 surface, with the effort concentrated on two things: market presence and an outline of what’s coming in 2012. the market presence data is interesting. a number of big name brands like Land Rover use B1 in subsidiaries. Hang on – where have I heard that before? oh yes – that is an integral part of SAP’s BYD story with high expectations coming from the big SIs both on the domestic and Indian fronts.

Then there was the B1 starter pack story that allows potential customers to get going for under $10,000. SAP counts having sold to 75 net new customers on the starter pack version in two months. but again – there is a similar starter pack story for BYD though at least one reseller reckons it is closer to $15,000 to get going.

Then there was talk about professional services organisations as being SAP’s best market for B1 based upon sales made so far. Hmmm…BYD version 3.5, due for release in 2012 is planned to major on PSA functionality.

And then if that wasn’t enough, there is talk of seamlessly shoehorning HANA, the BIG, expensive high speed data analytics appliance into B1…and yes, there is a similar story around BYD.

But the real nut comes in the fact SAP is currently rolling out a program that will allow resellers to host B1 and resell access to the system on a subscription basis. the reseller holds the license and packages up a service program. Resellers have to shell €5,000 for the pleasure plus invest in infrastructure but they hold the ownership of the relationship with the customer and the all important license. Kolanot is already out ther ;e with this solution branded as BusinessNow.

During the Q&a, I along with colleague Jon Reed peppered the SAP team with questions about how this is going to work when to us it seems like BYD and B1 are on a collision course. the frightening response was – and I paraphrase – ‘we don’t know about BYD.’

The problems are more than theoretical. SAP likes to position BYD and B1 as alternatives that cater for different deployment preferences. That doesn’t wash. B1 is far richer than BYD at this point in development as you’d expect from a relatively mature solution. Yet, as the Kolanot example shows, it is being offered at a lower price point than BYD: $125 plays $149 per user per month. That will not be lost on buyers although to be fair it is unclear how precise the comparisons work out once you take into account any technical requirements for subscribed B1.

More important, as the functional gap between BYD and B1 narrows, it will be harder for SAP to sustain a line that puts the two solutions side by side without drawing the inevitable head scratching from buyers. Similarly, I have problems with the hosted subscription model run by resellers because it is inherently non scalable. Resellers may understand code but running a data center is best left to experts.

But the most troubling problem is that SAP doesn’t see the problems. Or if it does then they are locked into the minds of one level of management and not communicated at the SVP/VP level. if it was otherwise then we would have got answers beyond the sometimes uncomfortable silences.

Past analysis has been very much focused on whether ByDesign represents a direct long term threat to the Business Suite, largely because the senior level messaging behind it is that the BYD architecture IS the future for SAP. to me that has always been a long time into the future – a good five or more years out.

In a year’s time, I reckon those internally competitive problems are going to be focused directly on BYD and B1. this is one train wreck SAP cannot easily deflect without some very sharp thinking that is not currently in evidence.

Expect an update when we get to SAP TechEd in mid-September.

Friendly faces at Local’s Family Diner strike a chord, but food doesn’t resonate

When shoreline populations swell in summertime, locals can feel crowded out of their hometowns. Beach parking lots are full, shopping streets are jammed and waiting in restaurants is par for the course.

Facts Local’s Family Diner

Howe St., SouthportContact: 457-0444Hours: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. SundayPrice range: $5-$10Payment: CashSanitation grade: 91.5Atmosphere: Bright and casual with paper napkinsWe say: Lackluster food and service may mar the comfortable setting at Locals Family Diner.

Still, retreats from the masses are scattered about, Local’s Family Diner being among the most recent in Southport.

On an August weeknight, vehicles surround the low-slung, terra cotta-colored building resembling an all-American, ranch-style home. many license plates read “North Carolina.”

Several eyes look up as patrons step into the dining room. you never know who you might recognize, which is especially noteworthy to the small counter’s lone eaters. This part of the South’s preferred greeting, “hey” instead of “hi,” pops out often, as in, “Hey. I used to work with your mother. How is she? How are you?”

And so conversations begin in the airy space. Hefty beams support a natural wood ceiling hosting shiny, silver, exposed duct work. the aqua green and sandy tan color scheme feels somewhere between vintage beach house and tidy ship’s galley.

A well-known Southport restaurant family brings neighbors and tourists together at Local’s. Shanna Lewis runs the place with her sister Angie Goodwin and mom Pattie Hooks. the family also helmed PJ’s, Sea Captain and Chart House restaurants in Southport.

Seafood composes half the list. the Carolina coast’s ubiquitous choice of two, three or four combinations are mounded with lightly battered choices, including flounder filets that are crisp outside, pure white and tender inside.

Creamy chowder and crab dip, however, miss the mark. the chowder is chunky but salty, its seafood unidentifiable in flavor and appearance minus a tiny shrimp among the potatoes in one evening’s cup. the dip is mostly cream cheese with webby threads of crab meat that provide little texture or taste.

A ham sandwich with bacon and pineapple is fine but confusing. Called the Hula Burger, its grouping with other burgers on the menu implies that the sandwich’s components will top one of the house’s “hand-pattied” hamburgers.

A Salisbury steak special of late brought a dense patty and minimal gravy alongside a mound of oddly sweet and tan-colored “scalloped potatoes” that could have passed for mashed.

Cornbread was to accompany the special, but the big, yellow slices landed on some tables while others received hard, stale rolls. Dessert was included, too, but the server never mentioned it, which in the end was preferable. the lemon meringue pie’s spongy topping and too-sweet filling were better left in the kitchen.

Gmail or Exchange? Six questions to help you make the right choice

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

When it comes to e-mail, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution. I’ve learned that lesson emphatically over the last year as I’ve tested a variety of different e-mail solutions for myself and for various friends and clients.

The top-secret Technology Reviewers Handbook says that after all that evaluating I’m supposed to pick a winner. But there is no clear winner. instead, I’m happily using three different e-mail systems:

  • My business e-mail i running on a hosted Exchange account at Intermedia. My wife’s business account is hosted on the same server. (I’ve written previously about my reasons for choosing Exchange 2010; I switched to Intermedia earlier this year because they offered Exchange 2010 when other hosted Exchange providers were still offering Exchange 2007.)
  • I have a single user account at Office 365 for several upcoming projects, where features other than e-mail were the deciding factor.
  • I’m playing Google Apps administrator for an out-of-state client who needed a free, easy e-mail solution that would work well with his new Android phone.

Why three different solutions? Because each client (including myself) had different needs. I sorted them out by asking a series of questions and thought it might be useful to share my decision tree here.

A note: If you live in the United States, your options should be the same as the ones I write about in this post. In other countries, some services might not be available, and others might be offered at different prices. In addition, I do not cover the many educational offerings available for students and others associated with an educational institution.

1. Do you want a store-and-forward server or one that syncs your messages in the cloud?

Most Internet service providers offer POP3 mailboxes. They’re usually a standard feature with cheap web-hosting plans, too. These accounts use store-and-forward servers that assume you’re downloading your messages to a local store and deleting them off the server immediately. the server isn’t designed to keep an archive. Your master copy of any message is local.

For this question, I think there’s only one correct answer. If you work in a big corporation, a central server that stores every user’s messages is a key part of a legally acceptable archiving policy. But a cloud-based server is also a good idea even if you’re a one-person organization. If you have more than one device (smartphone and PC, maybe a notebook, maybe a tablet), keeping everything in sync with a POP3 account is impossible. I still have a few POP3 accounts associated with some domains I own, but I forward all incoming messages from those accounts to a cloud-based account.

2. Do you need a custom domain?

I’m a firm believer in owning your own domainâ€"especially for business mail. You might be perfectly happy to use a generic webmail address as your calling card to the rest of the world. (Just don’t adopt an address from your ISP as your primary e-mail account. If you move or change service providers, that address will become useless.)

The free Google Apps offering allows you to assign your custom domain to Google Apps. Hotmail offers this feature, too, but the domain management tools in Windows Live Admin Center made me want to scream in frustration. For my out-of-state clients, it took a few hours to get their custom domain working with Google Apps, but after those initial hiccups were out of the way it’s been problem-free.

Naturally, all of the paid servicesâ€"hosted Exchange, Office 365, and Google Appsâ€"offer excellent integration with custom domains. For Office 365 and Intermedia, I had a choice of turning an entire domain over or just defining mail exchange (MX) records. If you know your way around DNS configuration, this is a straightforward task. If you don’t, be prepared to ask for help (or take a crash course in DNS management).

Here’s the DNS manager for an Office 365 P plan. Note that you must set up the MX records with an external DNS service and can’t edit them here:

And here’s the custom DNS manager that Intermedia customers find in the HostPilot control panel:

3. Do you plan to use Microsoft Outlook?

If you live in Outlook, then your primary account should be on an Exchange 2010 server. Period. full stop.

The combination of Outlook and Exchange offers great online and offline support. That’s true whether you’re using Microsoft’s Office 365 or a hosted Exchange option like Intermedia’s. Hotmail accounts work well after you install the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector.

My experience with accessing Gmail and Google Apps accounts via Microsoft Outlook has been consistently badâ€"so bad that I won’t use the two products together. I won’t recommend that combination for anyone else, either. If you have a Gmail account and you want offline access, you can use the Offline settings in Google’s Chrome browser or try a third-party client program other than Outlook.

Also, how do I set it up so I can admin the server from a different network?

Hopefully you have a firewall in front of your server?

Configure the web server:

How to setup my own DNS server?

Stock Assault 2.0 - Artificial Intelligence Stock Market Software

I am a newbie in DNS server setup. I have registered more than 100 domain names and now I want to put all of them live. I want to do the DNS hosting by myself rather than using commercial DNS servicem, saying I would like to have DNS servers as:
dns1.mydomain.com
dns2.mydomain.com

Currently "mydomain.com" zone file is hosted in the colocation center's DNS server.

I have one dedicated Windows 2000 server with many IPs. I want to use this server as dns1, and dns2 with different IP. this server has been setup as a DNS server.

The questions are:
1. how can I setup the dns1.mydomain.com as a reconginzed DNS server? Do I need to register dns1,2.mydomain.com with some agents? if so, where?

2. where I should setup the zone file for dns1.mydomain.com and dns2.mydomain.com–my colocation center DNS server or my own DNS server?

3. after I setup zonefiles for my 100+ domain names and change their name servers in godaddy.com to dns1.mydomain.com, dns2.mydomain.com, I won't have any problem on that. is it right?

Any suggestion and instruction are appreciated!

Madhu.
